Traveling in Macedonia by TrainMacedonia has a well developed railroad system. It is connected to Yugoslavia to the north, and to Greece to the south. The main station is in Skopje. All domestic lines are operated by Macedonian Railways (Makedonski Zheleznici), with links from Skopje to Kumanovo in the north, to Tetovo in the west, to Shtip in the east, to Veles and Gevgelija in the south, and Prilep and Bitola in the southwest. Intercity trains link Skopje with Serbia and Greece. Travel to Bulgaria is via Nish, Yugoslavia.
Makedonski Zheleznici operates the railways and maintains over 900 km of lines, 315 km of which are electrified. The main north-south line from Belgrade, Serbia, to the port of Salonika, Greece, on the Aegean Sea, passes through Skopje. In the planning stage is a project to construct a new east-west line, which would connect Varna, Bulgaria, on the Black Sea, with Durres, Albania, on the Adriatic Sea. The first phase will be construction of a line from Gjuesevo, Bulgaria, to Kumanovo, Macedonia, to link up the existing lines. The second more difficult phase will be construction of a line to connect with Albania.
